There’s something so comforting about a simple, clean routine – especially when it comes to the products we put on and in our bodies. But if you’ve ever read the label on your toothpaste or lotion and thought, wait… what even is that ingredient?, you’re not alone. A lot of everyday health and personal care products are packed with synthetic chemicals, preservatives, and artificial fragrances that can do more harm than good.

Luckily, with a little awareness and a few changes, it’s completely possible to simplify your routine and cut out the worst offenders.

Why It Matters

Our skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs a good chunk of what we put on it. So when our deodorant, sunscreen, or face wash contains ingredients linked to hormone disruption, allergies, or long-term health risks – it’s worth paying attention.

Many conventional health products include ingredients like:

🌲 Parabens – preservatives linked to hormone disruption
🌲 Phthalates – often found in fragrances, can interfere with endocrine function
🌲 Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – a harsh detergent that can irritate skin and eyes
🌲 Triclosan – found in some antibacterial products, linked to antibiotic resistance and hormone disruption
🌲 Artificial fragrance or parfum – a blanket term that can hide hundreds of potentially toxic chemicals

Here are a few options to consider:

Toothpaste

Try switching to a fluoride-free or low-fluoride toothpaste that avoids artificial sweeteners and dyes.
Try: Davids Natural Toothpaste – made with natural ingredients and recyclable metal tubes, or even more options in my blog post here!

Deodorant

Conventional antiperspirants often contain aluminum, which clogs pores to block sweat. Natural deodorants work with your body instead of against it.
Try: Meow Meow Tweet – baking soda-free options and compostable packaging. Or check out my blog post here to see all my recommended brands.

Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens can contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are not only harmful to humans but also to marine life.
Try: Raw Elements – reef-safe and made with non-nano zinc oxide, or read my blog post here for even more options.

Body Wash & Soap

Look for bar soaps or liquid washes without SLS or synthetic fragrance.
Try: Ethique – solid bars for body, face, and even shampoo, with zero plastic waste.

Moisturizer

Skip the petroleum-based lotions and go for plant-based, nutrient-rich alternatives.
Try: Evolve Organic Beauty – UK-based, vegan, and eco-friendly.

A Few More Tips:

🌲 Check the ingredient list – Shorter is usually better.
🌲 Use the Think Dirty or EWG apps to scan products for toxic ingredients.
🌲 DIY when you can – A little coconut oil or shea butter goes a long way.

There’s no need to panic or purge your entire bathroom cabinet overnight. But paying closer attention to what goes into your body and onto your skin is a small act of self-care in itself. And it’s a big step toward living a more intentional, low-tox life!
