Packing light and sustainably? It’s not only possible – it’s incredibly liberating. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend getaway or embarking on a longer adventure, adopting a zero-waste, minimalist mindset can help reduce your environmental impact while making travel smoother and more intentional.

Over the years and many intercontinental flights, I’ve learned how to pack for trips with less clutter and waste, and trust me: it makes everything from airport security to hotel stays feel way more relaxed.

1. Start with a Packing List (and Stick to It)

Minimalist packing starts with planning. Choose versatile, mix-and-match outfits and focus on layers rather than bulk.

Ask yourself:

Do I really need this, or just want it “just in case”?

Creating a reusable digital packing list (or one in your notes app) can help you pack smarter every time you travel.

2. Bring Reusables

One of the best ways to reduce waste while traveling is to avoid single-use items. Some favorites that I always toss in my bag:

🌲 Collapsible or stainless steel water bottle
🌲 Reusable utensils or travel spork
🌲 Bamboo toothbrush & solid toothpaste tabs
🌲 Silicone travel containers or shampoo bars
🌲 Reusable cloth bags for snacks, laundry, or shopping

These take up minimal space and eliminate the need to rely on disposables while you’re away.

3. Ditch Travel-Size Plastics

Travel-size shampoo bottles might be convenient, but they create a ton of waste.

Go for solid or refillable alternatives:

🌲 Solid shampoo + conditioner bars – Kitsch makes a great rice water set I’m obsessed with (super moisturizing, and my hair’s never looked better)
🌲 Refillable containers – silicone or aluminum ones are ideal
🌲 Solid deodorant or lotion bars – lightweight, spill-proof, and long-lasting – check out Wild deodorant for a delicious assortment of scents with zero plastic waste.

4. Opt for Multi-Use Clothing & Layers

Choose clothing that works for multiple settings (city exploring and hiking, for example) and that doesn’t wrinkle easily. Neutral tones and breathable, sustainable fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, and Tencel are ideal.

Tip: Packing cubes or compression bags help keep everything organized while saving space.

5. Pack a Zero-Waste Toiletry Kit

Think beyond just swapping plastic: go for low-waste and long-lasting products that won’t leave anything behind when you head home. Some essentials:

🌲 Bar soap in a tin
🌲 Menstrual cup or reusable pads
🌲 Refillable razor (like Leaf or Oui the People)
🌲 Organic cotton face cloth instead of disposable wipes

6. Minimize Electronics & Tech Accessories

Do you need your laptop and your tablet and your Kindle? Probably not. One or two multifunctional devices usually cover everything, and fewer cords and chargers = less clutter.

7. Pack Light, Leave Space

Traveling with less feels good. It makes every part of the journey more intentional. Plus, leaving room in your bag means that if you happen to pick up a meaningful souvenir on your trip, you’ll actually have the space for it.

Zero-waste travel doesn’t mean perfect travel. It’s just about doing the best you can with what you have, and making thoughtful choices that benefit both you and the planet.
