Fragrance is a very personal thing, but it’s also one of those products that can hide a lot behind the label. Conventional perfumes often rely on synthetic ingredients, undisclosed “fragrance” blends, and heavy packaging that’s hard to recycle.
There are some really beautiful alternatives out there though. I’m talking brands that focus on natural ingredients, safer formulations, and more thoughtful production.

What to Look For in a More Sustainable Fragrance
When I’m choosing a perfume or cologne with sustainability in mind, these are the things I tend to look for:
🌲 Natural or naturally derived ingredients, ideally with some transparency around what’s actually inside.
🌲 Avoid vague “fragrance/parfum” blends where possible, and look for brands that are more open about their formulations.
🌲 Alcohol derived from organic or renewable sources.
🌲 Minimal or recyclable packaging (glass bottles, refill systems, etc.)
🌲 Cruelty-free and vegan formulations.
Here are a few really nice sustainable perfume brands worth checking out:
1. Abel
Abel is one of the strongest names in natural perfumery. They create scents using plant-derived ingredients and biodegradable formulas. Their fragrances are layered and complex in a way that still feels like traditional perfume, but without the heavy synthetic base. The brand is also transparent about ingredients, which is surprisingly rare in this space.
Price range: $80–$180 depending on size
🌍 New Zealand-based, with global shipping and retailers across Europe and North America
Floral Street blends modern perfumery with a sustainability focus, using responsibly sourced ingredients and recyclable packaging. Their scents are calm and approachable, a great entry point if you’re transitioning away from conventional perfumes.
Price range: $70–$120
🌍 UK-based, widely available across Europe, the US, and online retailers
3. Lush
Lush is probably the most well-known brand on this list, and while they’re not perfect, they’ve been pushing for transparency, ethical sourcing, and low-waste packaging for a long time. Their perfumes are often available in solid form (which cuts down on packaging) or in recyclable glass bottles, and they’re very clear about ingredient sourcing compared to most mainstream brands.
Price range: $30–$150 depending on format and size
🌍 UK-based, with stores and shipping available worldwide
Heretic Parfum creates bold, more unconventional scents using natural botanicals and essential oils. Their fragrances lean a bit more experimental, which is nice if you’re tired of everything smelling the same. They also avoid synthetic additives and focus on small-batch production.
Price range: $65–$165
🌍 US-based, ships internationally
5. Aesop
Aesop’s fragrances are subtle, earthy, and a bit more understated than typical perfumes. While the brand isn’t fully natural, they do emphasize higher-quality ingredients, cruelty-free formulations, and refillable or recyclable packaging.
Price range: $100–$200
🌍 Australia-based, with global stores and online availability
6. Ffern
Ffern takes a really different approach, releasing small-batch, seasonal fragrances made from natural ingredients. Each scent is produced in limited quantities, which helps avoid overproduction, and everything from the ingredients to the packaging is designed with sustainability in mind.
Price range: around $120 per bottle (subscription-based)
🌍 UK-based, with international shipping
7. Oway
Oway (Organic Way) focuses on biodynamic and organic ingredients, and their fragrances follow the same philosophy. They use glass and aluminum packaging instead of plastic wherever possible, and their formulations are rooted in plant-based ingredients.
Price range: $50–$120
🌍 Italy-based, available across Europe and through select international retailers
8. Le Labo
Le Labo is not a fully sustainable brand, but they’ve made some meaningful moves like refill programs and on-demand production, which reduces waste. Their fragrances are hand-blended and have a strong, distinctive identity, which is why they’ve become so popular.
Price range: $90–$300 depending on size
🌍 US-based, with global retail presence
By Rosie Jane creates clean fragrances with a focus on transparency and safer ingredients, avoiding phthalates and other commonly questioned additives. The scents are light, wearable, and designed for everyday use rather than being overpowering.
Price range: $70–$140
🌍 US-based, ships internationally

Fragrance is a bit of a tricky category because there’s no perfect option yet, but there are some better ones out there. Choosing brands that are more transparent, use safer ingredients, and think about packaging is a really good place to start. And you can still smell amazing!
