I’ve been living in my current apartment for over a year, and I’m still pulling things together trying to create a space that feels cozier, greener, and more “me.” Rugs are such an important part of that – they do so much more than just cover a floor. They bring warmth, texture, and comfort to a space, and can completely change the mood of a room. So I’ve been keeping an eye out for beautiful options made from natural materials.

The problem is, SO many rugs today are made from synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon, which are essentially plastic. Not only do they wear out quickly, they also shed microplastics into your home.

Natural materials like jute, cotton, hemp, and even wool are a much better choice. They’re durable, biodegradable, and have such a nice timeless, earthy look. And most importantly, they just feel so much softer and cozier under your feet.

Here are some great brands I’ve found that are making rugs you’ll actually want to live with for years and years.

All of the brands I’ve included here offer plant-based options, but it’s worth noting that wool is another common natural material you’ll often come across when looking for a sustainable rug. I usually try to avoid animal products whenever I can, but if you’re considering a wool rug it’s important to make sure it’s sourced ethically. Look for brands that are transparent about animal welfare and have certifications like the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) or ZQ Merino. These ensure that the sheep are treated well and not harmed, and that the farming practices are sustainable.

Rugs are one of those things you’ll use every single day, so it’s definitely worth finding one that feels good underfoot and lasts. Choosing natural materials not only avoids plastic in your home, but also supports craftsmanship that’s been around for centuries.
